Such a beautiful tune that everyone will recognise! This is the easiest possible arrangement of Danny Boy. The melody is shared between the two hands so that it is possible to play with good technique, even if it’s your first harp piece. There is no accompaniment, only the beautiful melody we know and love, clearly written out for the absolute beginner harp player. NOTE: Both hands are written in the treble clef, with the right hand fingering above and the left hand fingering below.

Difficulty level & Skills required

Early-Beginner: The melody is shared between the right and the left hand, so you will never have to play two hands together or think about melody plus accompaniment. You will use fingers 1, 2 and 3 and basic bracketing.

This course was very thorough. I reallyyyy enjoyed it. So grateful for this website. Thank you so much! I especially like the way you taught section H, because you told us to place our opposite hand *before* plucking with the other hand. This enabled us to distribute the weight of the harp among more fingers, thereby reducing the chance of tiring out one or two fingers.

HI Kellie, Christy-Lyn here! I saw your lovely review (thanks so much, I’m really glad you enjoyed this course! 😊). I just wanted to respond to the part where you talked about “distributing the weight of the harp among more fingers”. Your comment made me wonder about how you are balancing your harp, since our fingers shouldn’t be carrying the weight of the harp. The weight of the harp should be mostly balanced on it’s own because of the balance point of the harp, and then pulled slightly beyond that balance point to rest gently on the right shoulder/chest. I don’t want your fingers to be getting tired from carrying the weight of the harp through the strings.

You can see me explain this in the Danny Boy course in Section A – Part 1, at 01:34. Perhaps you can watch that part again just to check whether you’re on the right track with how your harp needs to balance, and if it’s still confusing you might want to consider getting a feedback video or a lesson with our other harp teacher Carrie so she can help you to make sure that you’re a a good position and won’t cause any muscle strain to your fingers or body? I just want to make sure you’re ok! Sending love, Christy-Lyn xx

I’m 36 and brand new to playing a musical instrument. This is the first song I learned (after Twinkle Twinkle) on my first instrument, a Fireside cardboard harp. Starting at basically zero, it took about two weeks, with quite a bit of daily practice, to get through the course and reach a point where I feel I can play the piece at speed with good technique, albeit not always without mistakes :). It’s been fun to watch this recognizable tune develop, while developing my own comfort with the instrument. The course was broken down so that each lesson was easy to grasp and remember as you moved through the piece. I’m excited to keep practicing and to try the next song!

I only just purchased a small 19 string harp at a Ren Fair. A binge buy I was afraid, I wouldn’t know where to start learning. But with this and some of her Youtube videos I was able to really learn something without getting discouraged. I highly recommend it for anyone starting their harp journey, just like me! Have fun playing!

This lesson was great! The “loop” exercises help me strengthen my fingers and help me get used to playing two hands together. Also encourages me to learn how to read my music along with playing AND counting the notes… slowly, but surely…. Thanks! See you at my next lesson! VS

I found that I wanted to move on more quickly though as I already read music and I have had to come back to work through more slowly on the detail and finish the course. I think that’s maybe feedback more for me than for you! ( I began your courses on a lap harp and now I have just acquired a lever harp I am trying to go back and check my technique as I learn to sit.)

The amount of progress I made with just this one course is insane. I have already learned so much, improved my technique and been able to play and learn a lot faster than when I was trying to teach myself by ear and reading music only. Excellent teacher! Thank you <3
